The Objective
In the highly competitive travel sector, understanding customer behavior, booking preferences, and demographic trends is critical for targeted marketing and revenue growth. The objective of this project was to transform raw booking logs into a multi-page, interactive executive dashboard to track $61M+ in revenue and analyze the behaviors of over 45,000 customers.
Technical Highlights & Methodology
Rather than building a standard static report, I structured this dashboard into specialized analytical views (Overview, Trend, Reservation Insights, and Customers) to address different business questions:
- Advanced Root-Cause Analysis: I integrated Power BI’s AI-driven Decomposition Tree visual. This empowers stakeholders to perform ad-hoc drill-downs into customer segments—for instance, dynamically breaking down the 45k+ user base by returning status, equipment rentals, specific island destinations (e.g., Oahu vs. Maui), and gender.
- Animated Time-Series & Seasonality: To understand growth trajectories, I engineered an animated scatter plot with a time-based play axis, allowing users to visually track YTD Revenue versus YTD Customer Acquisition by country over the fiscal year. I also utilized Small Multiples to cleanly compare seasonal booking trends across distinct travel interests (Honeymoon, Relaxation, Sports, and Sightseeing).
- Dynamic KPI Goal Tracking: Wrote custom DAX measures to calculate actuals against predefined business targets for New, Repeat, and Total Customers, applying conditional formatting to instantly flag underperforming metrics.
- Cross-Filtering & UX: Implemented global slicers (Primary Interest, Age Group, Gender, Date) that sync seamlessly across all report pages, ensuring a cohesive exploratory experience for the end-user.
Business Impact
- Targeted Marketing Optimization: Identified that “Sport Activities” and “Relaxation” drive the vast majority of revenue ($50M+ combined), allowing marketing teams to reallocate budget away from lower-performing segments.
- Geographic Expansion Strategy: Highlighted Germany and Australia as top-tier international markets, providing actionable data for international ad spend.
- Retention Tracking: Uncovered distinct return rates based on reservation types (Single vs. Couple vs. Family), highlighting an opportunity to build targeted loyalty programs for single travelers who currently exhibit the highest return rate (14.9%).
